About the role

Embedded Linux Engineer
Morningside, Auckland | Permanent | Hybrid

Join a specialist product engineering team developing embedded platforms used in real-world connected devices. You’ll work across Linux kernel development, BSPs, device drivers, board bring-up and platform-level software.

We’re looking for an Intermediate to Senior Embedded Linux Engineer to join an established software engineering team based in Morningside, Auckland.

This is a hands-on, low-level engineering role sitting at the intersection of software and hardware. You’ll work across embedded Linux platforms, supporting the development and integration of software that runs on purpose-built hardware.
The environment includes Linux, Android/AOSP and embedded systems, with a strong focus on reliability, performance and long-term product stability.
If you enjoy getting underneath the application layer — working with kernels, drivers, boards, peripherals and hardware integration — this is the kind of role where you can genuinely get your hands dirty.

What you’ll be doing:

You’ll work across a range of platform-level engineering activities including:

  • Developing and maintaining Linux BSPs
  • Supporting new board and hardware platform bring-up
  • Linux kernel configuration and development
  • Developing and maintaining device drivers
  • Working with interfaces including I2C, SPI, UART, USB, PCIe and GPIO
  • Configuring and maintaining bootloaders such as U-Boot
  • Debugging complex hardware/software integration issues
  • Working closely with hardware engineers during board validation
  • Building and maintaining embedded Linux environments
  • Supporting system performance, boot time, stability and power optimisation
  • Contributing to testing, code reviews, documentation and engineering quality
The role also has exposure to AOSP, including Android platform customisation, HALs and system-level integration.

What we’re looking for:

We’d love to speak with engineers who bring strong hands-on experience in:
  • Embedded Linux development
  • Linux kernel internals
  • BSP development / board bring-up
  • Linux device driver development
  • Hardware/software debugging
  • Embedded hardware interfaces such as UART, I2C, SPI, USB or PCIe
  • Yocto, Buildroot or similar build environments
  • Git and modern software development practices
Experience with AOSP builds, Android platform customisation, HAL development or RTOS environments would be a strong bonus.

More importantly, you’ll be someone who enjoys solving difficult technical problems, can work independently and is comfortable collaborating closely with both software and hardware engineers.
Why this role? This isn’t a traditional enterprise Linux or infrastructure position.

You’ll be working on actual embedded products, where your code interacts directly with hardware and where platform reliability matters. The wider product environment spans touchscreen interfaces, embedded compute hardware and software platforms used by global OEM customers across industries including security, fire and life safety, professional AV and building automation.

You’ll also have the opportunity to take genuine ownership of platform engineering — from initial board bring-up through to shipped-product stability and ongoing platform improvement.
